By Amanda Shore An asteroid that was spotted by Australian astronomers passed by Earth tonight and missed our planet by 5.3 million kilometers and away from the moon’s orbit. We were never in danger of being hit. The asteroid could be seen with a telescope from Australia. Since there aren’t any clear images of the asteroid, we will have a hard time studying it. However, scientists have been able to calculate its orbit and therefore trajectory. The asteroid, called 2012 LZ1, will pass through Earth’s orbit again in 2016. It will not come close enough to cause any damage.
