This year’s Tony Awards was hosted by Neil Patrick Harris, who opened with, “Welcome to the 66th annual Tony Awards or as we like to call it, ‘the Fifty Shades of Gay.'” This was Neil’s third time hosting the awards, and he definitely brought the fun and entertainment to tonight’s show. Also during the opening of the show, the cast of “The Book of Mormon” did their number “Hello!” in which Neil Patrick Harris joined them on stage.
The Tony awards were heavily attended tonight by famous faces such as Ricky Martin, Sheryl Crow and Emma Stone. Tonight’s show was very entertaining, and it was amazing to see such amazing actors, actresses, stage directors and other theater production crew all on one stage starting with “The Book of Mormon”cast, Neil Patrick Harris suspending from the ceiling as Spiderman and Audra Mcdonald earning her first lead actress Tony award. Before tonight’s show, she had already had four, but this year for her role in ‘The Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess’ she recieved her fifth Tony for Best Actress in a Musical. Other winners at tonight’s Tony awards were “Once,” which led with a total of six gongs, including Best Direction. Right on the heels of “Once” was “Peter and the Starcatcher,” which won four, including Best Actor in a Featured Role in a Play, which went to Christian Borle.
Hugh Jackman Actors’ Equity Association received a special Tony Award, and Emanuel Azenberg also received an honor of being awarded with the Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in the Theater. Tonight was a great night for all things theater. Tonight’s show difinitely left me with a great impression and wanting to catch a few broadway shows. Congrats to all the winners, and thank you to all who bring us these great shows on Broadway.
