It has finally happened, it has taken eight years, but Michael Phelps
didn’t medal in a race since the 2000 Olympics in Sydney. Still, an
American took gold, with Ryan Lochte taking the proverbial round one of
Lochte vs. Phelps.
Lochte didn’t just win the race, he blew everyone else away. Lochte
beat the silver medal winner, Brazilian Thiago Pereira, by 3 seconds.
Japan’s Kosuke Hagino took bronze.
Phelps showed struggles in barely qualifying for the race early
in the day. Phelps’s poor showing was summed up by him very simply as “a
crappy race.” He added, “I felt fine the first 200, then I don’t know.
They just swam a better race than me, a smarter race than me, and were
better prepared than me. That’s why they’re on the medal stand.” With
the fourth place finish, Phelps was denied his 17th Olympic medal.
Lochte showed his dominance in a race he was heavily favored in..
Phelps and Lochte go head to head again in the 200 individual medley.
