Beloved actor and all around southern gentleman Andy Griffith died this morning, Tuesday, July 3rd, 2012. He was 86.
Reading from a Griffith family statement, Dare County N.C. Sheriff Doug Doughtie reported that Mr. Griffith had passed away around 7 a.m. at his North Carolina home.
“Mr. Griffith passed away this morning at his home peacefully and will be laid to rest on his beloved Roanoke Island,” Doughtie said that the family will release all further information.
He had suffered a heart attack and underwent quadruple bypass surgery in 2000.
He is best remembered for the Andy Griffith show and his role as a small town sheriff in the fictional town of Mayberry R.F.D. The show ran from 1960 thru 1968.
He returned to TV in 1986 as a southern lawyer in the hit series Matlock. The show ran from 1986 to 1995.
His portrayal of an honest and fair, rural southern sheriff was his trademark.
A true southern gentleman in every sense of the word, his warm, gentle good humor and Southern sensibilities’ will be sorely missed by all.
