Cole Hamels, Phillies agree on $144M

The debate of is Hamels staying or going is finally over. There are
$144 million reasons over 6 years to that question now. Phillie fans
couldn’t be happier to keep their 2008 World Series MVP.

The contract is the second-highest for a pitcher behind the $161
million, seven-year deal the New York Yankees gave CC Sabathia in
December 2008. It is also the largest contract signed Philadelphia
athlete. The contract averages $24M a year, adding him to $20M arm
club of the Phillies rotation along with Roy Halladay and Cliff Lee.

Hamels, 28, is 11-4 with 3.23 era and 131k’s in 19 starts this season.
Hamels was drafted by the Phillies in 2002 and is 85-58 with a 3.38
era in his first seven seasons with the Phillies.
