After an absence of 12 years, the old guard is back on top. The PRI had reigned supreme over Mexico for 71 years, sometimes called the “perfect dictatorship” by some. And then they were unceremoniously pushed aside in the year 2000 by more youthful reformer types.
There is no return to the past,” said the youthful, 45-year-old who is married to Mexico’s most popular soap opera star. “You have given our party a second chance and we will deliver results.”
Pena Nieto called his victory “a fiesta of democracy.”
The second place candidate, leftist Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador, refused to concede, saying he would wait for a full count.
Lopez Obrador of the Democratic Revolution Party had 31 per cent and Josefina Vazquez Mota of the ruling National Action Party had about 25 per cent, according to theelection sources.
