American Idol Wants Nick Jonas & He Wants Them

Singer-songwriter Nick Jonas has confirmed reports that “American Idol” producers have reached out to the pop rock artist.

Both Jonas and Pharrell Williams are in talks to join “Idol.” If he gets the gig, The 19-year-old Broadway star will be the youngest judge in the history of the show.

Jonas is well-known as one of the “Jonas Brothers,” a pop-rock band that was featured in starring roles in several Disney Channel original series and films, including Camp Rock. Jonas later formed the band “Nick Jonas & The Administration,” which released its debut album in 2010.

If no other Idol personal changes arise, Jonas will work alongside fellow judges Randy Jackson and Mariah Carey, who, as Broadway World previously reported, was confirmed as a new judge in July. The announcement followed reports in the same month that Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez would not return for season 12, which will kick off in early 2013.

Other than Jonas, both Pharrell Williams and Adam Lambert’s names have surfaced as contenders, although neither has been confirmed.

Nick Jonas played J. Pierrepont Finch (preceded by Daniel Radcliffe and Darren Criss) in the closing cast of the 2011 Broadway revival of “How to Succeed in Business without Really Trying.” Jonas began his Broadway career at the age of 7, performing in shows such as “A Christmas Carol,” “Annie Get Your Gun,” “Beauty and the Beast” and “Les Misérables,” as well as “The Sound of Music” at Paper Mill Playhouse.

“American Idol” has been the No. 1 entertainment program among total viewers for the past nine consecutive seasons. To date, Idol alums have produced 349 No. 1 Billboard hits and garnered nearly 250 million iTunes downloads. Last year, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery released his debut album “Clear As Day,” which dominated the Billboard Country Albums chart and has gone platinum, selling more than one million copies. Season 11 winner Phillip Phillips’ first single, “Home,” which was released May 23, has been certified gold.
