The Chicago Tribune has reported a Reuters story claiming that roughly 1000 Syrians have fled to Turkey in the last 24 hours to get away from increasing bloodshed in their country. A defecting Syrian brigadier-general is among those fleeing. This latest cluster brings the total of Syrian refugees in Turkey to 45,500 according to the Tribune report. In addition to the almost 50,000 refugees that have crossed the border at least 25 of them are military generals.
The Syrian uprising has triggered a refugee crisis in Turkey and their neighbors. The opposition reports that more than 18,000 people have been killed since the revolt against President Bashar al-Assad began in March of 2011.
Officials in Turkey have voiced concern over the increasing flow of refugees from Syria’s largest city of Aleppo as Assad’s forces use warplanes and heavy artillery to pound rebel fighters.
