On August 19, 2012 at approximately 12:17 p.m. LVMPD patrol officers responded to the 2500 block of South Maryland Parkway in response to a call of an attempted robbery and one subject being shot. When officers arrived they discovered an adult male lying in front of the store with a sword next to him, and he was suffering from apparent multiple gunshot wounds. The subject was transported to Sunrise Hospital Trauma Center where he was later pronounced deceased by medical personnel.
Homicide detectives were then called to the scene. The preliminary investigation indicates the suspect entered the store and threatened the clerks with a sword. One of the clerks retrieved a handgun and fired multiple shots, striking the suspect.
The investigation indicated the suspect had been dropped off in front of the store moments before the crime by a female who was later identified as Carol Matteo. Matteo, who is 47-years-old and resides in Las Vegas, was arrested in connection with this event and has been charged with:
Robbery with a deadly weapon, Conspiracy to commit robbery and, Burglary.
The clerk has not been arrested as of this release. The case will be fully investigated and submitted to the District Attorney to make the final determination on whether or not to seek charges against the clerk.
