They have already shown their commitment to one another by staying together longer than most showbiz relationships can last the distance. So on Thursday, August 23, 2012, singer Rufus Wainwright has married his longtime partner Jorn Weisbrodt in Montauk, New York.
The online magazine, People.com reported that Montauk, Long Island ceremony was attended by more than 250 guest including a slew of celebrities; among them were Julianne Moore, Yoko Ono, Sean Lennon, Alan Cumming, Lou Reed, Paul Simon, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Ronson who also assisted with DJ duties during the reception.
The party favour de jour was a jar of plum jam inscribed “Rufus+Jorn’s Hochzeit.” It is cute but doesn’t make plum jam any nicer. TheStar.com reportedly confirmed that “instead of gifts, the couple is requesting donations to help pay for their new 25-foot Airstream trailer.”
Wainwright’s Publicist, Bianca Bianconi, confirmed that her client and Jorn Weisbrodt, the German-born artistic director of the Luminato Festival, wore custom Viktor & Rolf Monsieur and were married by a longtime friend, the artist Justin Vivian Bond.
The Salome Chamber Orchestra and David Aron Carpenter played during the ceremony and Rufus’s sister, singer-songwriter Martha Wainwright, also performed.
Wainwright and Weisbrodt have a 1-year-old daughter together in a parenting partnership with Lorca Cohen, daughter of Leonard Cohen.
Wainwright is the son of singer Loudon Wainwright III and the late Kate McGarrigle of the McGarrigle sisters. His sister Martha is also a singer and often performs with her brother.
Wainwright, whose songs include “Dinner at Eight and One Man Guy,” invited his sister, Martha Wainwright, also a singer, to perform during the ceremony.
”The Happy couple ate lobster rolls, local corn, steamers and clams, toasted with Nicolas Feuillatte champagne, and danced into the wee hours to tunes spun by deejay team AndrewAndrew – as well as Mark Ronson,” People.com said.
In 2010, Wainwright, 39, who has long been openly gay, announced his support of gay marriage after previously experiencing his indifference in 2008.
“I have been with Jorn for five years and he’s the light of my life. He’s my inspiration, support and he’s good in the sack, too!” said the crooner, whose album “Out of the Game” was released earlier this year. “But I am very aware of living in the U.S., of the conundrum that you can’t marry your gay partner and give him citizenship. He has to apply for a green card and he may or may not get accepted, which is annoying when you’re in a committed relationship. If we were straight, we could get married and he’d get his American passport and it would make a lot of sense,” he explained to Perez Hilton. “I wasn’t a huge gay marriage supporter before I met Jorn, because I love the whole old-school promiscuous Oscar Wilde freak show of what ‘being gay’ once was. But since meeting Jorn that all changed.”
All in all the wedding went off without a hitch. With Sean Lennon looked rather dapper, and girlfriend Charlotte Kemp bringing her catwalk glamour to balance the couple’s look, how could the wedding be anything but spectacular.
