Anybody who’s ever listened to ICP’s lyrics can tell you that they’re not traditionally what one would hear when listening to underground rap music. That’s because ICP’s lyrics, while technically belonging to the underground rap music genre, are more specifically members of an underground rap music micro genre, horror rap.
But whether ICP lyrics are for you or ICP’s lyrics are not for you, they provide a rare insight into the man who helps to write them all: Shaggy 2 Dope.
Born Joseph Utsler, Shaggy 2 Dope has been in some way involved in the writing of ICP lyrics since the early days when ICP stood for Inner City Posse. But ICP’s lyrics back then were just as unique then as ICP’s lyrics are today, so one has to wonder just what is going on in the heads of Violent J and Shaggy 2 Dope when they’re writing these underground rap music hits.
Little is known about half of the ICP lyric-writing team, Shaggy 2 Dope. It is know that he came from a rough neighborhood in Detroit, and while un-cited, it has also been said that Shaggy 2 Dope spent the majority of his adolescence growing up on Detroit’s streets.
Shaggy 2 Dope eventually was introduced to Violent J (Joseph Bruce) through Shaggy 2 Dope’s brother, who was closer in age to J than him. What would commence with their meeting is an ongoing relationship of 20+ years featuring a boatload of underground rap music, wrestling and clowns. Yet despite the ups and downs, the two have stayed very close through it all.
Shaggy 2 Dope, in between wrestling and Insane Clown Posse stints, has released two records on his own, F*ck Off! and F.T.F.O (F*ck the F*ck Off!), in 1994 and 2006, respectively. Neither have reached the same status as the albums filled with ICP lyrics, but the titles of Shaggy 2 Dope’s underground rap music albums go to show that he’s the same angry lyricist outside of ICP.
With a few exceptions, you won’t find many other underground rap music makers using such blatant vulgarity in their albums’ titles!
On a more personal level, Shaggy 2 Dope is part Polish and part Cherokee, one more characteristic that makes him unique among underground rap music makers. Shaggy 2 Dope has a younger and older brother, his older brother Mike being better known for his underground rap music moniker, John KickJazz.
Personality wise, Shaggy 2 Dope is known as the more serious of the two underground rap music makers in ICP. Shaggy 2 Dope is said to have suffered from depression and anxiety throughout his career, but has been sober for the past three years. Shaggy 2 Dope is also a very talented artist, and has drawn the album covers for many of ICP albums, as well as the underground rap music group’s famed hatchetman logo.
