Charlize Theron and Eric Stonestreet are no longer a couple, they never were

The web-sphere has been replete with the unlikely rumor that Eric Stonestreet and Charlize Theron were an item. Well, not so fast; because according to the Emmy-nominated “Modern Family” star there is nothing going on. If Stonestreet was directly asked if he and Theron are an item, the funny man would surely reply that they are no longer a couple just to invoke a smile. But the fact of the matter is they never were.

Eric took to Twitter on Sunday to weigh in on a report from Britain’s Daily Mail that claimed “things are blossoming” between the Oscar winner/single mother and himself.

“I wish people would stop spreading rumors that Charlize Theron and I are dating,” EricTweeted. “It’s starting to make Halle Berry jealous.”

Added his rep to PEOPLE: “There is nothing romantic going on between them.

Stonestreet, who’s nominated against costars Ty Burrell, Jesse Tyler Ferguson and Ed O’Neill for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series, has a not-so-steamy (but still special) Emmy date to root him on: his best friend Paul.

“He dared me to audition for the first play I ever did at [Kansas State University],”Stonestreet said.

But maybe next year the solo star will have a plus-one for TV’s biggest night. “I’ve never been recognizable like this and single at the same time,” he told PEOPLE earlier this month, “but it’s definitely fun.”

The Daily Mail also reported, “Eric is down to earth and funny and Charlize thinks the world of him. It’s early days but they’re very fond of each other.”

The actor’s rep was quick to point out that the pair has only met a few times.

“There is nothing romantic going on between them. He has only met Charlize twice!” the actor’s rep told People.

As Eric makes his way down the 2012 Emmy Awards red carpet, he won’t have Charlize ( or Halle) by his side – he’s actually taking a friend.

“Today I’m taking my best friend Paul to the Emmys. He dared me to audition for the first play I ever did,” the “Modern Family” star said in another Tweet.

True to his comedic roots? Those tweets were lame.
