Rumor has it that one of P.T. Anderson’s new films, “The Master,” is a fictional account of Scientology’s L. Ron Hubbard’s rise to power in the Church of Scientology. And while it is assumed that the preponderance of Hubbard’s church is the vessel for which the movie is transported, it is less about the church and Hubbard, and more about one powerful man’s beliefs having massive influence over one extremely ambiguous mortal being.
Actor Philip Seymour Hoffman, seen in the movie clips mentoring Joaquin Phoenix’s character, a violent alcoholic grifter and an on again off again adherent to Hubbard’s dianetics, as Scientology was referred to in the early days, display’s some of his best work here. Definitely his best movie since he appeared in Magnolias with Tom Cruise, and one of his top 10 movies of his career.
When queried if he had shown Cruise the movie previews, Anderson replied, “Yes, I have shown him the film, and yes, we are still friends,” Anderson said. “The rest is between me and Tom.”
Tom Cruise has been making headlines for all the wrong reasons lately, starting with the break-up with his wife Katie Holmes , and subsequent divorce. His quick hush hush divorce settlement led to rumors that the Church of Scientology forced him to settle quickly, as to keep his name and the church’s out of the headlines.
Vanity Fair reported that the church had allegedly “scrutinized” different groups of women for Tom, all current church members, to try to assign the “right” bride for Mr. Cruise. All this after his broken affair with Penelope Cruz and his marriage to Katie Holmes.
Tom Cruise has appeared in some of the greatest movies of all time, and his filmography looks like the top ten movies ever produced.
