Nashville–One of the world’s highest paid athletes, Shaun White was arrested and hospitalized following an alleged drunken confrontation with employees at the hotel he was staying at.
According to TMZ: White was in a Nashville hotel when he allegedly trashed his room in a stupor. When he was confronted by hotel staff, Shaun allegedly pulled several fire alarms and then ran fast … so fast he fell and split his head open.
Law enforcement tells the website, Shaun was arrested for public intoxication and vandalism, but was taken to a hospital for treatment first. Once he’s treated he’ll be taken to jail.
Police say he was given the opportunity to sign misdemeanor citations and refused.
A separate affidavit states that White deliberately broke a phone belonging to the hotel.
A spokeswoman for Baptist Hospital said White was treated there and released on Monday.
Asked about the incident, Loews Vanderbilt Hotel manager Tom Negri said Monday in a statement that the hotel is committed to the safety and confidentiality of its guests. The statement didn’t identify White and referred all questions to the Metropolitan Nashville Police Department.
The 26-year-old is one of the premier snowboarders in the world, winning the gold medal in the half pipe event at the last two Winter Olympics. He is a favorite to win another gold when the 2014 games in Sochi, Russia, arrive.
He has also been a fixture at both the Summer and Winter X Games. At the 2012 Winter X Games, White became the first person ever to score a perfect 100 on a half pipe event.
At the 2012 Summer X Games, White then decided not to rekindle his rivalry with Pierre-Luc Gagnon on the Skateboard Vert, as noted by ESPN’s Keith Hamm.
White has also spent time this summer recovering from a knee surgery he underwent in late July.
The Olympian has multi-million deals with Kraft, Burton, Red Bull, Target, Oakley, Ubisoft, was one of the highest-earning athletes appearing at the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.
White is worth an estimated $20 million and earns a reported $2 million per endorsement deal. Last year, Bloomberg named White the second most powerful athlete in 2011, second behind NFL quarterback Peyton Manning.
For the past decade, White has been carefully cultivating his brand. Just last month, he talked about how he approached endorsement deals.
“If it is something that you are going to have your name on, promote it,” White told Yahoo. “And if you want your fans to like it and support you in that sense, then it has got to be real,” he says, adding athletes should “keep it true.”
With his seemingly rock star attitude, White is certainly the man to be talked about at the moment, especially after his performance at the 2012 London Olympic Games.
The sportsman did little to dispel reports that he is dating model Bar Refaeli as they attended the swimming event together.
The Israeli blonde, 27, sat next to redhead White as they watched Team USA win the men’s 4x200m freestyle relay final.
The duo were sat behind Debbie Phelps and her daughters Hilary and Whitney as they watched Michael score his record 19th Olympic medal.
The pair were first linked after meeting at the Maxim magazine Hottest Woman In The World party in May.
As one of the most recognizable names in all of extreme sports, White is an international star. While athletes who compete in such dangerous events are known for having outlandish personalities, this will be a blow to his image.
