In a recent interview on “Chelsea Lately,” Shia LaBeouf explained how he got his role in director Lars Von Trier’s forthcoming movie, “The Nymphomaniac.” Chelsea Handler was immediately interested in LaBeouf’s claims that he may actually be having sex on camera for the film. My only question as we’ll get to letter is, what’s the point. In other words, why would you not want to simulate the sex scenes in “The Nymphomaniac?”
LaBeouf admitted he’s not 100% sure what will happen, but anything is possible. “I don’t know what it’s gonna be until I get out there, I know he’s a very dangerous director and I know we’re trying to do something different,” he said.
According to him in an MTV interview, Lebeouf is on record as saying: “Von Trier is very dangerous; he’s the most dangerous dude that I’ve ever showed up for. I’m terrified. I’m so terrified, which is why I have to go. We’ll see what happens.”
He went on to explain in the interview, how he got the job in the first place. “I sent videotapes of me and my girlfriend having sex and that’s how I got the job,” LaBeouf explained, flashing an “OK” sign to the crowd. But was he serious?
It was never clear if he was joking or not, but the claim, regardless of its veracity, is definitely capable of producing even more early buzz for the film.
The film titled “The Nymphomaniac” follows the story of a woman’s sexual history, narrated by her husband, reportedly also stars Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgard, while Nicole Kidman is also rumored to be attached. It’s been reported LaBeouf could possible play one of the Gainsbourg’s lovers in the film.
“The movie is what you think it is,” LaBeouf said. “It is Lars von Trier, making a movie about what he’s making. For instance, there’s a disclaimer at the top of the script that basically says we’re doing it for real. Everything that is illegal, we’ll shoot in blurred images. Other than that, everything is happening.”
Shia LaBeouf’s latest film has barely begun filming and is already stirring up controversy. The film is said to have begun filming on August 28th in Nordrhein-Westfalen, Germany. From there the 11 week shoot will continue in Flanders, Belgium.
The cast also contains Charlotte Gainsbourg, and Jamie Bell, with some speculation that Nicole Kidman will also have an unspecified role.
There has been a lot of buzz recently about the star going out of his way to land a new movie role, mainly due to the fact that the movie will feature real sex, but my question as I stated earlier is, what’s the point?
For a start, they can only show so much. They would have to shoot it with some level of class in order for it to be shown in theaters country wide. If they go the full hog and show things going in and out of other things it will just be another porn film, right? Rules differ from country to country, but here is what the UK thinks (from the British Board of Film Classification website):
Sex education at ‘18’
Where sex material genuinely seeks to inform and educate in matters such as human sexuality, safer sex and health, explicit images of sexual activity may be permitted.
Sex works at ‘18’
Sex works are works whose primary purpose is sexual arousal or stimulation. Sex works containing only materials which may be simulated are generally passed ‘18’. Sex works containing clear images of real sex, strong fetish material, sexually explicit animated images, or other very strong sexual images will be confined to the ‘R18’ category. Material which is unacceptable in a sex work at ‘R18’ is also unacceptable in a sex work at ‘18’.
So what if they show a bit much?
To be shown only in specially licensed cinemas, or supplied only in licensed sex shops, and to adults of not less than 18 years
The ‘R18’ category is a special and legally restricted classification primarily for explicit works of consenting sex or strong fetish material involving adults. Films may only be shown to adults in specially licensed cinemas, and video works may be supplied to adults only in licensed sex shops. ‘R18’ video works may not be supplied by mail order.
That means they do have to be careful. There are some big stars in this movie, which involves some big pay checks. So they need to make their money. Also, if people go to watch a movie, surely they go for the story. If people want to see sex they can just watch porn. This is the internet, there’s quite a bit of it knocking about. Which makes me ask again, what’s the point?
The concept of putting real sex in a mainstream movie is not a new one. There are rumors all over the place. People including Tom Cruise, Willem Dafoe, Sienna Miller and even Anakin Skywalker himself, Hayden Christensen, are rumored to have got their jollies on for real in movies. Let’s hope Hayden is better at performing than he is at acting. But, rumors aside, there are plenty of films where non-simulated sex has been verified. Granted, most are European nonsense that you wouldn’t have heard of, but they still count. So, the movie isn’t breaking any boundaries; again, what’s the point?
The movie is called “The Nymphomaniac” so it’s pretty clear what you will be getting if you go to see it. There’s also the rest of the cast. With all the fuss being made over LeBeouf appearing in the film the rest of the cast seem to have managed to sneak in under the radar, and some of them are massive. Jamie Bell, Connie Nielsen, Stellan Skarsgrad, Willem Defoe, and Nicole Kidman are also set to star in this movie about ‘A women who discovers her hidden erotic desires’. Kidman is no stranger to on screen sex if rumors are to be believed. She and ex hubby Tom Cruise are said to have done the deed for real while starring in Eyes Wide Shut together.
So, here is where you come in. What do you think? Does the act of real sex in “The Nymphomaniac” make you feel different about the movie one way or another? Do you see the point?
