OFFICER FIRES WEAPON DURING OVERNIGHT SHOOTING AT LOCAL RESORT

On March 11, 2012, at approximately 3:51 a.m., LVMPD Patrol Officers assigned to work a scheduled special event at the Rio Hotel and Casino responded to reports of shots being fired on the fourth floor of the facilities’ East parking garage. Arriving officers observed multiple gunshots being fired by numerous individuals, both on foot and in vehicles, along with multiple subjects and vehicles attempting to flee the area. During the ensuing confrontation with these individuals one officer discharged his weapon, firing several shots at one subject. That subject, a black male adult, 22 years of age of North Las Vegas, was transported by medical personnel to the UMC Trauma Center with non-life threatening gunshot wounds. At this time it is unknown if the subject was hit by gunfire from the officer, or had been previously struck by gunfire from other individuals. Additionally, a second subject described as a black male adult, 24 years of age of Las Vegas, was transported by medical personnel to the UMC Trauma Center from a
different area of the same shoo

At approximately 5:38 a.m. LVMPD Patrol Officers responded to the area of the UMC Trauma Center to investigate reports of shots being fired at that location. Arriving officers discovered two individuals suffering from what appeared to be gunshot wounds. These individuals, described as a black male adult, 22 years of age of Las Vegas, and a black male adult, 19 years of age of North Las Vegas, had both suffered their injuries while assembled along with multiple other individuals outside of the hospital in support of the two subjects who had been transported from the original shooting scene. A preliminary investigation indicates multiple shots were fired at that group from a small caliber handgun by an unknown assailant on foot in the area. At approximately 6:04 a.m. LVMPD Patrol Officers responded to Sunrise
Hospital and Medical Center to investigate reports an individual who had been transported to that facility by private conveyance was suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Arriving officers determined this individual, described as a black male adult, 24 years of age of Las Vegas, was also present during the original shooting incident at the
Rio Hotel and Casino, and had suffered his injuries at that location. Because of the known gang affiliation of those involved with these crimes, the LVMPD Gang Crimes Bureau is assisting with this investigation.
