Firefighters are battling an enormous fire which has already rapidly consumed more than 60 homes in Breezy Point section of the Rockaway peninsula in Queens. One firefighter has been injured and two civilians have suffered minor injuries.

With no end immediately in sight officials say the fire was reported at about 11 p.m. Monday and at first involved approximately 50 houses situated in a flooded Zone A area.

A fire department spokesman says nearly 200 firefighters are currently at the scene.

With the winds galing, the situation appears to be quite dynamic as reports are now confirming that the Breezy Point fire has considerably worsened, and now reports tell us that more that 60 homes have either perished or are ablaze.

The cause of the fire was not immediately known, however, reports seem to suggests, though somewhat sketchy that a gas line might have sparked the blaze.
