Just as you started believing the cynics who claimed Justin Bieber’s popularity will eventually disappear, the pop star makes you a believer again. The teen singer totally dominated the American Music Awards Sunday night and undoubtedly made many more believers at his AMA coronation.
The 18-year-old teen phenom, won all three awards he was nominated for and put on a flawless theatrical dance performance, which led many to believe they perhaps they ain’t seen nothing yet.
However, the most interesting development on display at the awards ceremony was to see just how much influence Bieber has had with the like of Carly Rae Jepsen, Nicki Minaj and Jenny McCarthy. Well, maybe not McCarthy.
As the night’s most celebrated artist, Bieber took the show’s top award, winning “Artist of the year,” beating out Rihanna, Maroon 5, Katy Perry and Drake.
Accepting the Award with his mom by his side, the singer told an enthusiastic audience, “I wanted to thank you for always believing in me.” The pop- idol added, “It’s hard growing up with everything going on, with everyone watching me. I wanted to say that as long as you guys keep believing in me, I want to always make you proud.” Somebody out to tell him, he’s in no danger of losing believers. That was clear throughout the night.
He was also awarded Favorite Pop/Rock male artist in the first award handed out at Sunday’s show and gave a shout-out to those who didn’t think he would last on the music scene, saying; “I want to say this is for all the haters who thought I was just here for one or two years. I feel like I’m going to be here for a very long time.”
He also won favorite pop/rock album for his platinum-selling third album, “Believe.” He gave a stripped down, acoustic performance of “As Long As You Love Me,” then transitioned to the dance-heavy “Beauty and a Beat,” where Minaj joined him onstage, grinding with the teen for a few seconds.
Minaj, who wore three different wigs and four outfits throughout the night, repeated her AMAs wins from last year, picking up trophies for favorite rap/hip-hop artist and album for “Pink Friday: Roman Reloaded.” She was in an all-white get-up, including fur coat and pink hair when she performed her new song “Freedom.” The scene was ghostly and snowy, as a choir – also in white – joined her onstage. One background singer stole the performance, belting semi-high notes as Minaj looked on. See video below.
Not one to miss a picture opportunity, and obviously a massive Twilight fan, Jenny McCarthy decided the best idea was to grip Justin around the neck and kiss him as the pictured here shows. McCarthy had just presented the artist with his second award for Favorite Pop/Rock Album “Wow. I feel violated right now,” he said, jokingly, after the kiss.
“I did grab his butt,” McCarthy said backstage. “I couldn’t help it. He was just so delicious. So little. I wanted to tear his head off and eat it,” according to a Telegram.com published report.
Carly Rae Jepsen, the fellow Canadian whose career Justin boosted to the top of the charts this past year, scored her first major award for Favorite New Artist of the Year. On top of that, Bieber’s mentor, Usher, opened the show and took home his 8th AMA, for Favorite Soul/R&B Male Artist.
Bieber influence and presences was felt, even when he wasn’t receiving an award or performing for a Bieber Fever packed house, he was being praised by his colleagues. Most notably, Carly Rae Jepsen, who performed early in the night and won favorite new artist told the audience in her acceptance speech: “I am floored. Wow,” as she then turned to thank Bieber and his manager, Scooter Braun.
On another occasion, Carly introduced Bieber as the “current generation’s biggest superstar.”
Bieber’s red and black outfit seemed to be the night’s theme, as Swift and Usher wore similar ensembles.
Usher kicked off the three-hour show with green laser lights beaming onstage as he performed a medley of songs, including “Numb,” “Climax” and “Can’t Stop, Won’t Stop,” which featured a smoky floor and a number of backup dancers, as Usher jammed in all black, with the exception of his red shoes. He won favorite soul/R&B male artist.
Swift won her fifth consecutive award for favorite country female artist.
“This is unreal. I want to thank the fans. You guys are the ones who voted on this,” she said.
Swift gave a masquerade-themed performance of the pop song “I Knew You Were Trouble.” She sang onstage in a light dress while dancers wore mostly black. But then she changed into a red corset and black skirt, matching their dark mood. She even danced and sang on the floor as lights flickered throughout the performance.
“Dick Clark loved the power of music and its ability to create pure joy,” he told the audience, before bringing on Clark’s friend of 49 years, Stevie Wonder. The music legend performed three of his hits — “Master Blaster (Jammin’),” “My Cherie Amour” and “Sir Duke” — while a montage of Clark photos was shown behind him. While the night was certainly Justin’s, what not so certain is his on again off again relationship with Selena Gomez..
After the awards ending, TMZ reported that the two remain single. In their most recent report, the website states that Bieber has concluded that their breakup may all be for the best.
In contrast to TMZ’s report, E! News is claiming, that is looks as if Bieber and Gomez have once again reunited. According to their report, the duo were spotted together at the after-party for the 2012 American Music Awards Sunday night. And it was n
one other than Bieber’s “cougar rape” cohort, Jenny McCarthy, who spilled the news in a tweet, which read: “My cub @justinbieber brought his acceptable and beautifully aged beauty Selena to the AMA after party.”
E! also pointed out that multiple eyewitnesses told the entertainment website that earlier in the evening, the former (and maybe soon rekindled?) couple were spotted leaving the Nokia Theatre together hand-in-hand (!) after the show.
According to one source the former “Wizards of Waverly Place” actress, who was dressed casually in jeans and a dark top, must have arrived at the end of the show because she was nowhere in the theater. Once Bieber was done taking press photos, off they went. Now if you’re replaying the awards show in your head to try and remember if you saw Gomez in the crowd, don’t. She wasn’t there.
Perhaps, one of two reports are correct. In fact, come to think of it they both could be either false or correct. Surly without any evidence either way, their validity can’t be proved.
However, what can be proved is that Justin Bieber gave an electrifying performance at last night’s AMAs, and if you don’t believe me, believe the following AMA coordination video.
