Migraine Headaches: What Every Women Should Know

A Migraine headache is a chronic disorder of the brain, manifesting itself as mild to severe recurring headaches with multiple symptoms.

Increased sensitivity to sound and light, nausea and vomiting are some of the more prevalent symptoms. Migraines generally affect half of the brain, with a pulsating rhythm, and lasting as long as 3 days.

There are numerous triggers for a migraine, and it would appear that women get more than their fair share of these ailments.

About 18 % of women and 6 % of men will suffer from migraines in their lifetime. And more than 10 % of the overall population also suffers from migraines.

Recent studies have shown that migraines may be hereditary. Fully 40 % of children that have 1 parent that suffers from migraines will also suffer from the disorder, and the percentage rises to 90 % if that child has both parents as migraine sufferers.

$13 billion dollars are lost each year by American businesses because of lost productivity, and this disabling disorder interferes with people careers, education and social activities as well. The healthcare costs associated with migraines is $50 billion dollars per year, and rising.

So, what do we do, and how can we treat this disorder.
