SUSPECT SHOT BY POLICE AFTER TAKING ELDERLY WOMAN HOSTAGE

On Friday, November 2nd, 2012 at approximately 7:34 a.m. the LVMPD Communications Center received a 911 call from the management of an apartment complex located in the 3800 block of Cambridge. The caller stated a male tenant had become agitated and threatened to take someone hostage if he was evicted from his apartment.
LVMPD patrol officers who were nearby on an unrelated call were notified and quickly located the person identified by apartment staff. As the officers attempted to talk to the suspect, he ran to an elderly woman who was walking on Cambridge, grabbed her from behind and threatened to harm her with two knives which he held to her neck. Officers gave numerous commands for the suspect to drop the knives and release the woman.
When the suspect refused to release the hostage the officers fired their weapons striking the suspect. The victim was uninjured. The suspect was transported to Sunrise Trauma Center where he was later pronounced
deceased. The investigation into this incident remains ongoing. The identity of the suspect and the exact cause and manner of death will be released by the Clark County Coroner’s Office. The identity of the officers involved in this incident, who have been placed on routine paid administrative leave, will be released after 48 hours.
