Elementary School Student Goes to School With .22 Caliber Pistol He Received From Parents

Evading the Issue

Elementary School Student Goes to School With .22 Caliber Pistol He Received From ParentsSomeone just sent me an e-mail saying that if we had better psychiatric care, Columbine, Aurora, and Newtown would not have happened. What a bunch of ‘hogwash’. I don’t care how angry or crazy a person may be, if they do not have access to assault rifles or hand guns that can expel hundreds of rounds a minute, they couldn’t shoot anyone in the numbers we have seen in the last year.

We simply have to face the fact that too many women are killed by handguns in their own home, by men who are husbands, former husbands, boyfriends, or ex-boyfriends. Too many children die by gunshot in private residences. And now small children, barely more than babies were purposely slaughtered by someone with access to weapons of mass destruction.

Today an elementary school student in Salt Lake City pulled a .22 caliber pistol out of his backpack and pointed it at fellow students during recess. He said, “He was going to kill them.” When one of the female students said she was “going to tell”, he said “if you tell, I’ll kill you”. His parents gave him the gun because of Newtown.

Today, “Dick’s Sporting Goods”, one of the largest sporting goods and gun stores in the country removed assault rifles from their shelves. It has 511 stores in 44 states. They said they were removed “out of the respect for the victims and their families”. They have taken all guns out of their sporting goods store near Newtown, Connecticut.

Wal-Mart has pulled its online ads for the Bushmaster AR-15 assault rifle, but they are still available in stores. This gun was similar to the rifle James Holmes used in Aurora, Colorado, when he took the lives of 12 and injured 58 others.

While large retail stores have taken some action, small gun shops across the nation are not budging. In fact, their assault rifle sales and ammunition have skyrocketed since last Friday.

We have a serious decision to make. Would we rather be like Japan who reported zero deaths by gunshot in the last year, or continue to have an increase in the deaths of innocents just because someone’s ego is enhanced by the purchase of a lethal weapon. Are we going to be a nation of common sense as most of the rest of the world, or, as the NRA would prefer, become a nation consisting of almost every citizen carrying a concealed weapon? Should all teachers, movie theater operators, mailmen, bartenders, convenience store operators, Kirby Vacuum Cleaner salesmen, and census workers be armed? And at what age do we stop giving out concealed weapons permits. If the bill passes here in Nevada allowing university students to carry concealed weapons, why shouldn’t we allow high school students to do the same?

The argument against the ban of at least the deadliest forms of weapons is ludicrous. This should have happened over 40 years ago when the new age in weaponry began.

It’s too late to save the lives of 20 small children and 6 courageous educators. But if something isn’t done, your children and grandchildren could be next. Newtown proved it can happen anywhere, in any town or city, large or small.
