Northern Nevada's 20th annual Share Your Food Day expects to surpass last yearBy James Turnage

Today northern Nevada is operating its 20th annual “Share Your Food Day”. Locations are set up in Reno, Carson City, and Minden where anyone can drop off donations of non-perishable food or cash, including one in front of the Governor’s mansion.

In addition RTC, our local bus service, has placed barrels inside them to collect food. Instead of paying the fare, a food donation will get you a ride. If someone doesn’t need a ride but just wants to help, bus drivers will collect food items left at bus stops. This operation is planned between the hours of 6 a.m. and 6 p.m., but volunteers will continue to pick up donations until midnight, including the RTC.

Last year this drive collected over 22,000 pounds of food. It’s expected to surpass that total this year.

The food and money will go to the Northern Nevada Food Bank. A spokesman for them said that if someone can only afford a single dollar, the dollar will provide four meals for persons in need.

Our CBS affiliate has spearheaded this campaign for all of its 20 years. Both on air and behind the scenes employees are donating their time on a very cold day to make this successful. They are to be commended for their efforts.
