The BIGGEST Problem

By James Turnage

CNN is reporting that a study by 500 researchers in 50 countries between 1990 and 2010 discovered a major change in worldwide health threats. Their data shows that Obesity is a larger threat than hunger, and is the leading cause for disabilities around the world.

“We discovered that there’s been a huge shift in mortality. Kids who used to die from infectious disease are now doing extremely well with immunization,” said Ali Mokdad, co-author of the study and professor of global health at the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation at the University of Washington, which led the collaborative project. “However, the world is now obese and we’re seeing the impact of that.”

With the exception of many African nations, the entire world has a problem with obesity. Scientists blame the problem on the fact that the world has adopted “western dietary practices”, including Middle Eastern Nations.

We eat too much and too often, and we have become sedentary. We eat foods that contain more fat, and less protein. They suggest a diet of more fruit and vegetables would undo the problem, but it will take years.
