First Paula got the boot. The pussycat doll was soon to follow. Now Britney?
After weeks of rumors, TMZ reports that Britney Spears will not return to mentor contestants on the upcoming season of Fox’s singing competition ‘The X Factor’.
The 31-year-old pop princess was lured on board with a lavish $15 million salary to help boost ratings, but show creator Simon Cowell’s dreams (and ratings) fell flat this season. The first season only achieved half of the 20 million viewers Cowell originally predicted and the second season only opened to 8.7 million viewers – and was regularly beaten in the ratings war by NBC’s competing singing reality show, the Voice.
“I think Britney did a really good job,” said Fox Entertainment Chairman Kevin Reilly at Winter TV Press Tour 2013, days before Spears’ exit was announced. “People remain fascinated with her and always will be. She tucked in really nicely on that bench.”
Tucked in nicely may be one way to put it. Others may say, she looked complacent, almost bored.
Not even blatant producer attempts to audition Spears’ former childhood singing-partners were enough to bring her much-anticipated erratic behavior to the forefront.
No word on whether or not co-mentor Demi Lovato will return, but fellow judge L.A. Reid is allegedly bailing on Season 3. Rumor has it he wants to find musical talent…in the real world.
