Chief Brown Announces Promotions

Chief David Brown will promote Deputy Chief BrigitteM. Gassaway to Assistant Chief, Major James Scott Walton to Deputy Chief, and Lieutenant Santos Cadena Jr., to the rank of Major. Major Jeffery F. Cotner, who was promoted on October 3, 2012, will also be recognized because he was unable to attend his ceremony. The promotional ceremony will be held in the Donald A. Stafford Media Conference Room on January 15, 2013, at 10:00 A.M. Members of the media are invited to attend.

Assistant Chief Gassaway, a 28-year veteran, most recently commanded the Property Crimes Division. She holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Biology and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy and the John F. Kennedy School of Government. Other assignments include the Personnel & Development Division, Special Investigations Division, Internal Affairs Division, and the Southeast Division. Assistant Chief Gassaway will become Chief of Staff.

Deputy Chief Walton, a 21-year veteran, commands the Communications Sections. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Finance from Auburn University at Montgomery and is a graduate of the FBI National Academy, the ILEA Management College series, and the Caruth Police Institute Leadership series. His previous assignments include Media Relations, Planning & Accreditation, and Crime Scene Response Section. Deputy Chief Walton also served as Acting Manager of the City of Dallas Animal Services. He will assume command of the Support Services Division.

Major Cotner, a 30-year veteran, is currently assigned to the Crimes against Person Division. He holds a Bachelor of Science Degree in Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at San Antonio and is a graduate of the School of Police Supervision, Southwestern Law Enforcement Institute. His previous assignments include the Public Integrity Unit, Tactical Support, Planning & Crime Analysis, Narcotics, and Southwest Division.

Major Cadena, a 23-year veteran, is the days Watch Commander for the Communications Section. He holds a Master of Arts in Criminology and Criminal Justice from the University of Texas at Arlington and a Bachelor of Science in Criminal Justice from the University of Houston. He is also a graduate of the Caruth Police Institute Leadership series. His previous assignments include Narcotics, Patrol, Internal Affairs, Gang Unit, Detention Services, and General Investigations. He will be assigned to the Community Relations Division.
