India Struck by Strong 5.9 Earthquake

A strong 5.9 earthquake struck Phek, India moments ago. Officials confirm to news that the quake was one of the strongest quakes to strike the country this year.

The 5.9 quake hit 59 km SE of Phek at 01:41:52 UTC according to the U.S. Geological Survey.

The quake could be felt across the region.

A total of 169 temblors have peppered the Indian region over the last 12 months including 4 this year.

Earthquakes of this size have the potential to generate a widespread destructive tsunami that can affect coastlines across the entire Indian Ocean basin,” the US Pacific Tsunami Warning Centre said.

Though the US tsunami warning center advised local authorities to take “appropriate action”, the chances of this earthquake triggering a devastating tsunami is very unlikely.
