Taylor Swift took the stage at 11:39 p.m. Monday night to perform “I Knew You Were Trouble” on Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest 2013. But her performance in Times Square appears to have been overshadowed when the iconic superstar was photographed kissing Harry Styles as the clock struck midnight to bring in the new year.
The photograph and a variety of remarks quickly began to dominate the topic of discussion across Twitter accounts worldwide.
Earlier in the night, Harry was spotted attending Jay-Z and Coldplay’s New Year’s Eve Concert at the Barclays Center, but the One Direction cougar favorite quickly headed back to Manhattan to catch Taylor’s performance, reported Just Jared.
At the end of the day, Harry and Taylor or Haylor as fans are calling them, were spotted hand-in-hand while entering their hotel.
One might imagine that the story would end right there. For reasons no one can explain the event took on a life of its own.
The Twitter sphere was lite up throughout the early hours of 2013 as a rapidly growing Twitter trend surrounding the two mega stars began to take shape.
The first tweets seemed innocuous, pointing out how cut the couple looked and admiring that Swift and Styles for not being afraid to show their love and affection for one another when they kissed at the turn of the new year.
However, gradually, some of the same tweeters began to become inflamed over the idea of them being together as the reality of the moment began to sink in and take root.
The first tweet to that began the trend came from Funny Tweets @iQuoteComedy who wrote: “When Harry Styles and Taylor Swift break up she’ll write a song called, “I Went In The Wrong Direction.” The user @iQuoteComedy was then followed by The Funny Life @ItsFunnyLife who also tweeted the very same “When Harry Styles and Taylor Swift break up she’ll write a song called, ‘I Went In The Wrong Direction.'” Thus, began one of several Twitter trends that lasted through the night.
In light of what may have been perceived as Swifts taking advantage of Styles kindness, a number of tweeters began to increasingly become irritated over the midnight kiss.
Some tweeters seemed to abandon any semblance of contructive dialog opting instead the use of explicite language to communicate their passionate disapproval of Swift’s relationship with Styles. Georgia❤1D @georgieporgie1D remarked “Taylor Swift and Harry Styles kissing:Dick Clark’s rocking eve” you’re 🙂 a 🙂 fu**ing 🙂 w*ore 🙂 TAYLOR :)))))))))))
There were also many that had perhaps imagined they would someday get their chance to be with Harry as k i d r a u h l @KissYouNarry commented “MY HEAD WHAT AM I DOING CRYING OVER FU**ING HARRY STYLES AND FU**ING TAYLOR SWIFT KISSING BYE GOING TO CHANGE MY LFE WTF”
Then there were your garden variety comics among the those weighing in on the subject. These tweeters were busy fashioning new tweets intended to solicit laughter. You could see that in Fatma’s [O]@xphat’s tweet, which read; “If Harry Styles and Taylor Swift have kids they’ll all look like little Goldie Locks.
Many others simply tried to appear defiantly calm like Bitchez @mayli_lau who wrote “NOT! After these pictures of Taylor Swift and Harry Styles I dont respect them.
Thus the night continued with fans, one after another making their voices known as the predominant chorus leading all trends for the evening conveyed the message that Taylor would end up learning she had chosen the wrong direction and therefore the chant would find its way into one of her future songs.
So what does it all mean? Do you think Swift may have chosen the wrong direction or do you even care.
I’d like to know your thoughts.
