The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has identified the person believed to be responsible for the deadly shooting and the resulting vehicle collision that resulted in two additional deaths that occurred on Las Vegas Boulevard on Thursday, February 21, 2013.
The person police suspect fired the shots is now identified as 26 year old Ammar Harris. Harris is a black male adult who is 5’ 11” 180 lbs, and has brown hair and brown eyes. Harris goes by the name of Ammar Asim Faruq Harris, and variations of that name. Harris’ photograph accompanies this release. A photograph of the vehicle is also attached. At approximately 4:20 a.m. on February 21, LVMPD Officers responded to the intersection of Flamingo Road and South Las Vegas Boulevard to investigate reports of a multivehicle collision. Arriving officers determined the deadly collision was caused by a vehicle which abruptly entered the intersection after being involved in an altercation during which shots were fired.
The altercation is believed to have originated in the valet parking area of a nearby hotel.
Ammar Harris, the driver of a Black Range Rover, discharged several rounds from a firearm into a Maserati driven by Kenneth Cherry. Both vehicles continued Northbound on Las Vegas Boulevard. The Maserati entered the intersection of Las Vegas Boulevard and Flamingo Road, causing a multi-car collision. One of the vehicles involved was a taxi cab which caught fire following the collision.
The driver of the taxi cab and the cab’s passenger were pronounced deceased at the scene. Both the driver and passenger of the Maserati were transported to the UMC Trauma where the driver was pronounced deceased. Additionally, three occupants of other vehicles involved in this event were transported to area hospitals with minor to moderate injuries.
Harris has an extensive and violent criminal history and is considered to be armed and dangerous. He has several distinctive tattoos including a heart shaped tattoo below his right eye, and a large owl tattoo on his neck. This investigation remains ongoing. On February 28, 2013 the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department was notified that the suspect Ammar Harris was taken into custody in North Hollywood California by the Los Angeles based Criminal Apprehension Team. Harris was arrested without incident and will be transported to the LAPD Metro Detention Center to await extradition proceedings.
