Chicago: Motor Vehicle Thefts

About the Crime:
This alert gives notice to citizens residing and working in Area Central of a recent
increase in motor vehicle thefts and thefts from vehicle. During the month of
February several incidents have been recorded.
Offender(s) utilize a “Slim Jim” type device or pry tool and force entry into vehicle.
The offender(s) either take the vehicle or remove personal belongings from the
vehicle. Incidents involving the unauthorized towing of vehicles have also been
recorded.
The Bureau of Detectives: Area Central requests that you adhere to the following
preventive measures, regarding the securing of your vehicle.

• Some incidents involve tow trucks
What you can do:
• Park your motor vehicle in a well lit location
• Be conscious of any suspicious persons or vehicles loitering about
• Completely secure your vehicle when leaving, for any duration
• Remove any visible items from the interior of the motor vehicle, such as
cellular phones, lap top computers, purses/backpacks, etc…
• Don’t leave valuable documents in the glove compartment
• Never leave your motor vehicle unlocked or running while unattended
• If you must leave a key with an attendant, leave only the ignition key
• Always be aware of your surroundings
• Remember any unique physical characteristics (scars, limp, acne, teeth,
etc…)
• Never pursue a fleeing assailant, provide the information to the police
• If approached by a witness to the incident, request contact information
• Dial 9-1-1 immediately and remain on scene when possible
