The number 1 ranked Indiana Hoosiers are at the number 23 ranked Illinois “Fighting Illini” this evening. Will Indiana prevail, or will we see a new number 1 team again next Monday?
Although the Illini rank 73rd in scoring, nationally, 181st in rebounding and 307th in assists, don’t count them out of this game. Three players will be the key when they meet in Assembly Hall.
Senior guard Brandon Paul averages 17.4 points per game, but has only been scoring at 41%. He has more turnovers than assists. He will need to have a good shooting night against the Hoosiers, who have allowed big points from their opponents on occasion.
Nnanna Egwu is a 6’11”, 235 lbs. power forward/center, and Illinois’s leading rebounder and shot blocker. If they are to out rebound Indiana he will be the key. He will also need to add some interior points to open up outside shooting for Paul.
D.J. Richardson is a senior guard averaging 11.8 points per game, 4.4 assists, and has a free throw percentage of 82.7%. He is probably their best all- around player. Together, he and Paul could make Indiana uneasy from the perimeter.
Indiana appears to be back on track after defeating Michigan 81-73 last weekend. Saturday the Hoosiers travel to Columbus to challenge Ohio State.
