Atlanta: Police Educate Public On Taser Use

The Atlanta Police Department, in conjunction with City Channel 26, has produced a public service announcement it hopes will inform and educate the public on the recent deployment of 400 Tasers.

The main purpose of the PSA is to help the public understand that Tasers (generically known as electronic control weapons) are an effective tool to defuse potentially dangerous situations without injuries to both police officers and suspects. The video also shows – through demonstrations on Atlanta Police officer volunteers – that the effect of Tasers is short-lasting.

The Atlanta Police Department, in conjunction with City Channel 26, has produced a public service announcement it hopes will inform and educate the public on the recent deployment of 400 Tasers.

“It’s important that the public understand we take Taser use seriously, and spent a great deal of time ensuring that we selected a safe, effective option for officers to use when facing volatile situations in the field,” said Maj.Jeff Glazier, commander of the APD’s Training Academy. “We looked at research that shows departments that use Tasers have been able to reduce injuries to both officers and suspects.”

The X-2 Taser used by APD also has video and audio recording capabilities, automatically creating images and sound every time it is deployed. The recordings allow department supervisors and the Office of Professional Standards to review the deployment to ensure department policies are followed.

The PSA includes a brief welcome by Atlanta Police Chief George Turner and more detail on the device by Maj. Glazier.
