At approximately 2:15 am, uniformed Harrison (011th) District officers responded to a “domestic-related man with a gun” call in the 200 block of North Homan. Upon arrival, officers were allowed inside the apartment by a female victim who stated that the male offender was inside armed with a gun.
Fraternal Order of Police spokesman Pat Camden said at the scene. When officers entered the apartment, Harris allegedly exited the bathroom and aimed the gun at them, Camden said.
At this time, the offender emerged from a room armed with an automatic assault weapon and pointed the weapon in the direction of the officers.
John Harris died in a West Side apartment above Three Brothers Food Mart at 2:45 a.m. — about 30 minutes after the shooting occurred, authorities said.
The Independent Police Review Authority, which examines all police-involved shootings, is investigating the man’s death.
Two weapons were recovered from the scene and there were no reported injuries to police.
None of the officers was injured.
