On the very day of Jonylah Watkins’ funeral, Senate Democrats continued to display their cowardice to do the right thing.
On March 11th Jonylah, age 6 months, was lying in a mini-van while her father, Jonathan Watkins, 29, was changing her diaper. As Watkins was standing outside his van, a man appeared and opened fire, then ran through a lot and into another van that sped away. Jonathan was shot twice, in the cheek, the left side, and the buttock. Jonylah received a wound that passed through her shoulder and lodged in her thigh.
The baby was in critical condition after surgery at Comer Children’s Hospital, the Chicago Tribune reported. Jonathan Watkins went to Northwestern Memorial Hospital in serious to critical condition, the Tribune said.
Jonylah later died from her injuries.
Today teddy bears and flowers fill a church where family and friends came to pay their last respects to the child who never saw her first birthday.
“Lord, we pray that you would give (the girl’s family) supernatural strength,” Pastor Monique McCord said at Jonylah Watkins’ funeral with hundreds in attendance at a church in the Woodlawn neighborhood where the shooting occurred.
“All of us need to apologize to her for not doing our best to make the world a better place,” Pastor Marshall Hatch said. “She deserved better.”
Afraid of a battle with Republicans and the NRA, Democratic Senators today removed its ban of assault rifles from proposed gun legislation. How quickly they forget about the tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary. But we won’t forget come election time.
I know Jonylah was not the victim of a bullet fired from an assault rifle. But witnesses said they heard at lest 10 shots fired. The young children in Newtown were murdered with the aid of an assault rifle with a high-output magazine.
A nation whose government is controlled by special interests and, not by the people, cannot withstand the immorality and lack of conscience of those who govern it. Abraham Lincoln once said that our country could never be destroyed by an outside source. Its destruction would come from within.
It appears to me that he was “right on the money”.
