Princess Lilian Dead At 97
The Royal Palace of Sweden has announced that Welsh born Princess Lilian of Sweden has died today at her home in Stockholm, Sweden She was 97. Princess Lilian is the aunt of King Karl XVI Gustav, the reigning king of Sweden.
Born Lilian Davies in Swansea, Wales, England in August 1915, Princess Lilian was a commoner, married initially to British actor Ivan Craig in 1940.
When the 2nd World War broke out, her husband was drafted into the British military, as Lilian continued to work in a factory making communication devices for the British military.
It was during these years apart when Lilian first met Prince Bertil of Sweden, who at that time was serving in the Swedish Embassy in London as a Naval attaché. The relationship remained lukewarm until one evening when the Prince sent a car for her following an air raid in the area near her home..
It was at that point that a schoolgirl crushed blossomed into love for her man. One minor sticking point emerged however, as she was still married at the time to Ivan Craig, who as luck would have it, had fallen in love with someone else while serving overseas in the war, and an amicable divorce was fashioned.
Prince Bertil had more of his own problems with the liason, as he was 2nd in line behind his brother, who died during World War II in a plane crash, leaving behind an infant child who is now the current King Carl XVI Gustav.
Services have yet to be announced, and this is a sad day for the people of Sweden.
