Louisville’s Kevin Ware breaks leg (video)
In an attempt to block a shot by Duke guard Tyler Thornton, Louisville’s Kevin Ware landed awkwardly on his right leg. In the replay it appears that Kevin’s right leg snapped after coming down from a lengthy jump.
The injury occurred during the first half with 6:33 left in the second quarter with Louisville ahead 20-21. The game was delayed ten minutes as medics wrapped Kevin’s leg and loaded him on to a stretcher as his teammates and coach huddled together at mid-court.
Kevin Ware landed near his team’s bench and when he came down it is visibly clear that his teammates turned their heads after seeing their fallen teammate’s fall. Kevin suffered a gruesome injury and the footage in the video may be graphic for some.
Before Kevin was taken off to the hospital, he asked to have a word with his teammates, Kevin wanted to encourage his teammates to finish strong.
Former NFL and Washington Redskins quarterback Joe Theismann tweeted: “Watching Duke/Louisville my heart goes out to Kevin Ware.”
Louisville the top seeded team in the tournament went more than three minutes in the remainder of the first half without scoring but still finished the second half ahead 35-32.
After the half the Louisville Cardinals returned to the court before going on to defeat Duke 85-63, and advancing to the final four.
