Will Brady have Wes Welker in 2013?
Wes Welker is another of the seemingly endless group of talented and highly sought free agents this off-season. The Patriots’ leading receiver, and Tom Brady’s “go-to-guy”, has been talking with the Denver Broncos. It’s his decision to make. Would he prefer to catch passes from Brady or Peyton Manning?
During the combine, Broncos’ front office personnel were asked if they would pursue Welker. They said they had no interest in him. They wanted to acquire a talented tight end.
Today, Wednesday, the picture has changed. They are aggressively pursuing him and insider reports say they want to sign him by the end of the day. Insiders claim he was their first choice and was a perfect fit for the team, and they were only feigning no interest in Welker to misdirect the Patriots.
In 6 seasons with the Patriots and Brady, only one season showed him having less than 1000 yards receiving. In 2010 he had a mere 848.
The Patriots and Welker appeared to be making headway to a contract that would keep him in New England for years to come. When he became a free agent and a contract was offered to him, the dollar amount was far below what he had expected. Those who know Welker said he was “insulted”.
I’m sure Manning will be influential as they continue to negotiate. Adding Welker, what will a second year with Peyton at the helm look like for Denver?
