One of the most controversial relationships in history was between John Lennon and Yoko Ono. Yoko has been criticized for the “woman who broke up the Beatles”. This may or may not be true. The “Fab Four” found stardom in their early twenties, accomplished immeasurable fame and fortune, and had nowhere else to go. There was no more “up”. It was very possible that it was simply “time.”
Either way, the couple who were married 44 years ago March 20th, seemed happy with their lives. They began with a “Bed-in for Peace” on their honeymoon in Amsterdam. They protested against the war in Vietnam, and were joyfully raising their son Sean.
Recently a wedding picture has emerged of the couple. They were married in Gibraltar, and the snapshot shows them it what could be termed “unusual” outfits, and holding their wedding certificate.
I have always wished I were the “fly on the wall” when they were deciding what to wear or what they might do. Yoko, was a certified “Fashionistas” as far back as memory will take you. I always wondered if they were free spirits or intentionally plotted to shock the public.
The wedding picture shows John wearing a white suit and mock turtleneck. Yoko chose a white miniskirt, a floppy hat and knee socks.
It would have been hard for me to picture them in traditional clothing. Knowing their propensity for the bizarre and unusual, I half expected them to be naked in their wedding photo.
Looking back through the glit and the glam and thumbing through old photos of the couple’s public moments, its obvious the two were natural fashion connoisseurs. Moreover, because Yoko and John almost always appeared together draped in brilliant New York fashion wear they’ve sort of earned the title fashion “Fashionistas.”
