The victim was parked in front of a 7-Eleven about 5 p.m. Friday when a 39-year-old man described as homeless by neighbors doused him with a flammable substance and set him ablaze, said Sgt. Aaron Eaton of the Long Beach Police Department.
The victim survived the attack but suffered serious burns. He remained hospitalized in critical condition Saturday, reports City News Service.A suspect, a 39-year-old homeless man who frequents the area, was identified by witnesses and found about a block away. He was taken into custody and booked on suspicion of arson and attempted murder.
“This is an unsettling crime, a horrific act,” said Sgt. Aaron Eaton, with Long Beach Police Department.
The attacker approached the victim, tossed a flammable liquid into a green sport utility vehicle and sparked the blaze, Eaton said. Investigators do not believe the victim and attacker know each other.
