Two Young Cousins Die in North Carolina Home Construction Site Accident
Sunday night, two young boys were buried under piles of dirt when the construction pit they were playing in collapsed. The 6 and 7-year-old cousins went into the pit to retrieve a “child-like pickaxe” in the pit when the walls of the sloped pit collapsed on them just before 6 p.m.
The 6-year-old girl and 7-year-old boy had been playing in the backyard of a home in rural Lincoln County, North Carolina, approximately 20 miles from Charlotte. Neighbors say it was construction for a basement, but that has not been confirmed by authorities.
A relative immediately called 911 for help and the rescue effort began. However, as they had to use only shovels and their hands, it proved to be too daunting for the 75 workers.
This morning, after more than 12 hours of effort, the bodies of the children were pulled from the pit.
“‘There are times when calls like this happen when we are not able to make a difference because it is outside of our realm,’ Don Burleson, a spokesman for Lincoln County Emergency Management said. ‘It is devastating not only to the family but to all the responders out here.’” (cnn.com)
