Rick Warren’s Son Commits Suicide
Rick Warren, pastor of Saddleback Valley Community Church, and author of the best-selling “The Purpose Driven Life,” has lost his youngest son, Matthew, to suicide.
The 27-year-old was described as kind, gentle, and very compassionate. He had struggled with mental illness which often left him in a deep state of depression. He died Friday evening.
The Church released a statement on behalf of Reverend Warren.
“Despite the best healthcare available, this was an illness that was never fully controlled and the emotional pain resulted in his decision to take his life,” the statement said.
“We ask everyone to join us in praying for the entire Warren family and that God’s comfort and peace will be with them as they deal with this difficult situation,” the statement continued.
The Evangelical Church was founded in 1980 and serves the Southern California area in several locations.
Pastor Warren’s traditional, conservative views raised controversy when he was asked to give the invocation at Barrack Obama’s inauguration in January 2009.
