Atlanta: Police Homicide successfully sought Daniel Wade for 5 rapes and related charges
ATLANTA – On 05/10/13, Atlanta Police Homicide Unit Cold Case Squad Investigator A.B. Calhoun successfully sought indictments in Fulton County Superior Court against Daniel Wade B/M, 06/05/50, for 5 rapes and related charges. These rapes took place in 1986 and 1987 and are part of a larger investigation that possibly includes 29 rapes in Fulton, DeKalb and Gwinnett County. The assaults were dubbed the “Maintenance Man” rapes at the time because all of the rapes occurred in apartments and investigators looked into the possibility that the suspect worked for one of those complexes.
This investigation became a cold case after a thorough investigation. In March 2011, Daniel Wade, who is currently in Federal Prison in Kentucky for unrelated robbery charges, hit on a CODIS (Combined DNA Index System) match for five of the Atlanta rapes. At that point, Investigator Calhoun began working the case and through his investigation, he was able to locate four of the five rape victims. The fifth victim was deceased. Over time all four victims were re-interviewed and cooperated with the investigation. In late 2012, Investigator Calhoun traveled to Kentucky to interview Wade. In January of 2013, the case was turned over to the Fulton County DA’s Office for indictment.
