A man has been shot and killed in central Florida while being interviewed by the FBI in connection with the Boston marathon bombings last month.
Ibragim Todashev, 27, was shot dead Wednesday during the interview. He was believed to be from Russia.
Todashev was being questioned by the FBI and two Massachusetts state police officers about his relationship with the two Tsarnaev brothers charged in the Boston Marathon attacks and the 2011 triple-slaying in Waltham, Massachusetts. In this case, the victims’ throats were slashed and their bodies covered in marijuana.
The slain man was not a suspect in the bombing. He was believed to be a friend of the 2 brothers implicated in the attacks. The law enforcement officials also said that they had questions about Todashev’s relationship with Tsarnaev brothers, and the fact that he had spoken to the older Tsarnaev shortly before the Marathon bombing. The older brother died four days later in a shootout with the police.
According to FBI statement, Todashev initiated the attack against the FBI agent. He reportedly lunged at the FBI agent with a knife. The agent and the police officers than shot and killed him. The FBI agent himself was injured but his injuries are not considered life threatening.
A friend of Todashev ,who has been talking to the media said that both Todashev and he had been questioned and followed by the FBI ever since the bombing. He said they had been cooperating with the authorities and that had been interviewed for several hours.
According to the friend, Todashev wanted to leave the country but had been under intense pressure from the FBI not to do so.
According to an NBC report, Todashev had confessed to taking part in the triple murder in Massachusetts. The FBI is sending a team to Florida to investigate.
FBI Special Agent Dave Couvertier, said in an email statement. “As this incident is under review, we have no further details at this time.”
The explosions close to the finish line of the marathon killed three people and injured more than 260. Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is accused of carrying out the April 15 attack with his deceased brother.
According to reports, the body of Tamerlan Tsarnaev, whose burial was surrounded by controversy, was interred in an Islamic cemetery in central Virginia.
The younger Tsarnaev was captured hiding in a boat during a manhunt after the bomb attacks. He was found wounded inside the boat in Watertown, Massachusetts.
According to media reports, Dzhokhar Tsarnaev, left a message in the boat where he hid, describing victims of the attack as “collateral damage.” In the note, he also reportedly scribbled that his brother was a martyr, adding: “When you attack one Muslim, you attack all Muslims.”
The bombs were retribution for the US wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, the note said, according to sources.
The blasts left three people dead and 264 injured at the finish line of the city’s marathon on April 15.
