A 37 hour standoff in a New Jersey home ended Sunday morning. Three children are safe, but the bodies of a 44 year old woman and an 18 year old boy were discovered in what was described as an “advanced state of decomposition”.
Trenton Police Director Ralph Rivera Jr. told reporters they decided to storm the house early Sunday morning. The suspect, Gerald Tyrone Murphy, 38, attempted to use one of the three hostages as a shield, but Murphy was wounded, eventually dying from his injuries.
The three children, two girls ages 16 and 18 and a 4-year-old boy, were taken to a medical center for evaluation.
The deceased are Carmelita Stevens, 44, and a 13-year-old boy.
The standoff began on Friday when Stevens’ family reported they had not heard from her in several days. The police found a 19 year old boy hiding in the basement unharmed.
Police say Murphy had an extensive criminal record involving violence. An arrest warrant had been issued from Pennsylvania for Murphy for failing to register as a sex offender. In addition, he had been previously been arrested for robbery, a weapons offense and child endangerment.
