Extreme Weight Loss is ABC’s answer to NBC’s The Biggest Loser. In the premiere episode of Season 3, hosts transformational expert Chris Powell and his wife, Heidi, along with twin participants David and Rebecca, invite you to tweet to them live throughout the show from 8:00-10: p.m., ET.
As twins David and Rebecca were growing up in North Prairie, Wisconsin, they didn’t think that much about their weight, or that it might be getting excessive. Rather, David, who weighs in at 470 pounds and Rebecca, who weighs 398 pounds, spent their childhood making people laugh, not caring if sometimes the laughs came at their own expense. However, behind their smiles, the twins experienced a difficult upbringing,, and behind the smiles, they tried to hold back tears of pain. They used an overindulgence in food as an emotional outlet.
In the Season 3 premiere, Chris Powell decides to help the twins and tells them the good news on their 23rd. birthday. It’s not long before he realizes that the twins are co-dependent, and have been enabling each other in their poor nutritional and eating decisions for years.
Break out your boxes of Kleenex and get prepared for a tear-jerking episode, as the twins say good-bye to each other and are split up to participate in a 90-day challenge. Rebecca is sent to Arizona to work alongside Chris’s wife, Heidi, while David….
David mentions at the beginning of his weight-loss journey that he had always wanted to prove himself to his dad. He wanted to go through Navy SEAL training to show his dad that “he was a man.”
While Chris doesn’t go as far as to have David attempt actual Navy SEAL training, he does take the twins on his toughest milestone challenge ever. They head to a rigorous “Kokoro” training camp that’s designed to forge mental toughness. It’s modeled after the infamous Navy SEAL “Hell Week.”
After the twins suffer a setback, though, and their old habits begin to resurface again, Chris is concerned that they might not meet their weight loss goals.
Even if you are a person who has never had to personally deal with being overweight, or have had a weight loss problem, shows like Extreme Weight Loss and The Biggest Loser are fascinating to watch because they display the full range of human emotions to viewers. Participants in the shows lay their souls bare, and we get to see them as they seek to take control over their lives and make transformational changes for the better.
