An amazing miracle happened in Texas recently. A woman, 36 weeks pregnant, dies on her way to the hospital, gives birth by emergency Cesarean and then comes back to life. Her name is Elayna Nigrelli and she had a seizure at the high school where she worked, 3 weeks before her baby was due. She was working and suddenly reported feeling faint and within moments, suddenly fell to the floor.
No one knew what was happening, three teachers tried to perform CPR and called for her husband – who luckily worked two doors away at the same school. When he saw his wife lying on the group, foaming at the mouth and gurgling, he informed the group that she was having a seizure. His call to 911 reported his wife’s condition and the fact that their baby was soon due. By the time paramedics got 32 year old Elayna to the hospital, her heart had stopped beating. An emergency delivery by Cesarean was ordered and their daughter, baby Elayna, was born. The baby was considered to be deliverd ‘post-mortem’, since her mother was no longer alive. Then a miraculous thing happened. Elayna, who was technically considered dead (because she had no heart beat or pulse), came back to life. Her heart started beating again. The mood of the room suddenly changed from mixed feelings of relief and sorrow, to one of overwhelming awe and thanksgiving.
Baby Eleyna spent several weeks in intensive care while the miracle mother was placed into a five-day induced coma for observation. Doctors diagnosed her with a heart defect she wasn’t aware she had -hypertrophic cardiomyopathy – which causes the muscles of the heart to thicken, making it much more difficult to pump blood. Eleyna is now fully recovered, healthy and home with her precious cargo. Baby Elena is still receiving oxygen, but shows no sign of any problems or health troubles.
Eleyna believes that she was protected by God. She jokes that her daughter will always have that story hanging over her head, for the rest of her life.
It is a wonderful day when miracles can be seen and experienced by people from all walks of life. We have Eleyna and her baby to thank for helping us all have the opportunity to realize that miraculous things happen every day – everywhere.
For this Texas couple, it’s been an intense initiation into family life. I am quite sure it will be a distant day, if ever that they take their relationships for granted. May we all be blessed with such eyes of gratitude for the ones we love.
