Did mother deliberately dump sewer-trapped infant down toilet?
Did the mother of the infant who was rescued from a sewer pipe in China deliberately dump her infant down the toilet? That is the question the authorities are asking.
The 22-year-old woman who initially raised the alarm about an infant trapped in a sewer pipe in eastern China did not admit she was his mother until challenged by police. According to reports, she quietly watched the two-hour ordeal unfold in front of her eyes without acknowledging that the sewer-trapped baby was hers.
Sources say police, after becoming suspicious, searched the woman’s rented room in the building where the rescue occurred. There, they found toys and blood-stained toilet paper. The woman, whose identity was not revealed, confessed after police told her to undergo a medical checkup.
Firefighters, rushed to the rescue, Saturday, in the residential area of the city of Jinhua after receiving an alarm about the sewer-trapped infant. They found that the baby stuck in the L-joint of a sewage pipe just below a squat toilet in a public restroom in the building.
Rescue video of Baby No. 59 – named after his incubator number in the hospital – went viral after being shown on Chinese news programs and websites. It gained world-wide attention and inspired an outpouring of emotion and charity on behalf of the infant.
In the video, officials after detaching the sewer pipe from the ceiling were not able to free the newborn. The pipe was then rushed to a hospital where doctors and firefighters used pliers and saws to carefully pull the pipe apart and free the trapped infant from the toilet sewer pipe. The placenta was still attached to the baby. Aside from some minor cuts and abrasions to the head and the limbs, the baby, whose sex was revealed as male, was mostly unhurt. He weighed 6 pounds, 2.8 ounces.
The single woman, who lived in the building, told police she could not afford to get an abortion and delivered the child in the toilet on Saturday. She said she rushed to alert the landlord when her newborn slid in the toilet and became trapped in the toilet sewer pipe, according to sources. The landlord, however, told reporters she had not been aware of any recent pregnancies among her tenants. She added that there were no signs that the birth took place in the restroom.
Reports said the mother recounted to police she cleaned up the scene in the toilet after the delivery. She also said she tightly wrapped her abdomen and wore loose clothes in order to hide her pregnancy. Police initially said they would treat this case of the infant trapped in a toilet sewer pipe as a possible attempted homicide. It was not known if the mother would face any criminal charges.
According to recent reports, unwanted pregnancies in China have been on the rise because of absence of sex education. In addition, there is an increasingly lax attitude toward sex. Unprotected sex, between young men and young women has become common and abortions are on the rise.
Bloggers on Chinese sites expressed horror and pity for the baby’s suffering. Many surmised that the child had been deliberately dumped down the toilet sewer pipe.
According to reports, strangers poured into the hospital with diapers, baby clothes, powdered milk and offers to adopt him.
According to a Chinese news agency, the mother is a high school graduate. She works at a restaurant in the city of Jinhua. She told authorities she became pregnant after a one-night stand with a man who later refused any responsibility. According to local reports, the woman did not reveal the pregnancy to her parents. She stated she wanted to raise the child on her own but had no idea how to do it.
