Even though David Beckham announced his retirement from football (soccer depending on where you are in the world) at the end of the season, don’t cry for him yet; the iconic superstar of the field will still continue to earn millions of dollars every year.
Beckham was already earning more off the field in endorsements than he was while playing his beloved sport; at $50.6 million last year, he is one of the highest-earning international soccer stars. His deals with Adidas, Coty, Breitling, Sainsbury, and H&M earned him over $33 million, and all of those endoresments will continue beyond his retirement from his sports career. He made so little of his income playing soccer, $6.5 million, that he donated all of it to a children’s charity.
His announcement comes only days after claiming a Ligue 1 title, on May 12, he won a fourth different top flight winner’s medal, after beating Lyon (1 – 0 ) and claiming the Ligue 1 title.
Beckham, 38, signed a five-month deal in January at Paris St-Germain (PSG) donating his entire salary to a local children’s charity.
At 14, the international superstar joined Manchester United and went on to make 398 appearances, winning six Premiere League titles and the Champions League.
In 2005, Beckham became an ambassador for UNICEF; as UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador, he was involved in promoting London’s successful bid for the 2012 Olympic Games.
Beckham became a founding member of Malaria No More UK Leadership Council in 2009 and helped launch the charity with Andy Murray at Wembley Stadium. He also appeared in a 2007 Public Service Announcement (PSA) for Malaria No More advertising the necessity for inexpensive bed nets; the ads aired on Fox Networks in the United States including Fox Soccer Channel and can still be seen on YouTube.
Beckham is grateful for the life he has led, saying, “I’m thankful to PSG for giving me the opportunity to continue but I feel now is the right time to finish my career, playing at the highest level.” (bbc.co)
Besides his recent Ligue 1 title win, Beckham has won 19 other trophies, 10 of them league titles, he is the only English play to win championships in four separate countries.
In a career that spans two decades, Beckham says he has realized his dreams, moving to Real Madrid in 2003, and winning La Liga with them in 2007, he then moved to the United States with the LA Galaxy.
“If you had told me as a young boy I would have played for and won trophies with my boyhood club Manchester United, proudly captained and played for my country over 100 times and lined up for some of the biggest clubs in the world, I would have told you it was a fantasy,” he said. (bbc.com)
Beckham has been married to Victoria Beckham, aka “Posh Spice”, since July 4, 1999. The couple has four children: Brooklyn Joseph, Romeo James, Cruz David, and daughter Harper Seven. Elton John is the godfather to Brooklyn and Romeo, and Elizabeth Hurley is their godmother.
Beckham will play two more games before the end of the season; the final game will be on May 18.
While Beckham has made the decision to end his playing career, PSG President Nasser Al-Khelaifi is hopeful he and the player can come to an agreement regarding Beckham continuing as an ambassador for the team.
“‘I met him yesterday, actually, and he’s very interested to continue being involved with the big project of Paris Saint-Germain,’ Al-Khelaifi said at a news conference on Friday. ‘ He believes in the project, he believes in the club, he loves the club.’” (msn.foxsports)
