Can we even compare Colombian hottie Shakira with Mexican babe Paulina Rubio? It’s almost the same as comparing “the voice” with “X factor” or Kelly Rowland compared to Beyonce. (Kelly is just happy that she’s in! No cat fights necessary with Beyonce.)
To give both ladies, Shakira and Paulina a fair change we will start of with the cold hard facts: The first has her own soccer song and the latter is the songstress of the unforgettable “Boys will be boys”. They have a bit of an age difference, gap would be too big a word. (We are talking 6 years) Both have given birth to a baby boy. However Shakira is the one in a relationship with a Spanish soccer player and Paulina is still recovering from her amicable divorce.
Both have had their fair share of controversies: when shakira was pregnant with her first child she got slapped with a 100 million dollar law suit. Her former business partner-slash-lover of 11 years and sometimes even considered controversial, due to his political connections in Columbia, Antonio de la Rúa filed a lawsuit against her in California in April 2013. He wanted the money he deserved, according to his statement, because Shakira suddenly terminated their business partnership 10 months after their split. (Curiously enough during that romantic split Shakira had released a statement saying that Antonio would continue to be her business partner.)
Paulina on the other hand was accused of desecrating the Mexican flag in October 2007 during a fashion shoot. It was said that the Mexican Cosmopolitan had featured her naked wearing the Mexican flag. Her mother released a statement denying the charges and informing the public that Paulina never gave permission for publishing such photo’s.
According to Sony, Shakira is the highest-selling Colombian artist of all time, having sold 50 to 60 million albums. In comparison Paulina is very popular in Mexico and all over the world but as of yet hasn’t been able to add this title to her name.
Another issue that might sting Paulina is that she has been on the Spanish version of “the vocie” for kids as a coach. Therefore it would have been a logical step that she would have been asked also to coach “The Voice” in America for adults however the producers decided to work with Shakira. Maybe the producers will regret this decision soon because according to Shakira: ‘I am a person who has many dreams, But as soon as I accomplish one I move on to the next. That’s my fatal, absurd nature. Human beings are slaves to our dreams and I am, too.’ – The Observer Sunday July 14, 2002
Paulina doesn’t have to feel like she has lost this battle because she gets to work with Simon Cowell, Demi lovato and Kelly Rowland when simultaneously filling Britney Spear’s shoes, not such a bad move after all!
According to Paulina herself: “I love The X Factor! I can’t wait to find the next big music star here in America…Simon, be careful what you wish for, let’s see if you are ready to handle me, empieza la fiesta, amigo!”
