The Prescott Fire Department has reported losing 18 firefighters nearly the entire crew with one survivor.
The firemen were battling the Yarnell fire, according to Prescott Fire spokesman Wade Ward. Earlier in the evening there was an unconfirmed report of eight injured.
Prescott Fire spokesman Wade Ward told The Daily Courier the crew was battling the Yarnell fire, which has resulted in evacuations as it has grown to an estimated 1,300 acres in size.
According to Wade the survivor’s injuries are not know at this time. The names have not been released.
The American Red Cross Grand Canyon Chapter opened a shelter on the campus of Yavapai College Sunday for residents who had to evacuate. Red Cross Chapter Communications Officer, Trudy Thompson-Rice, said they expect the number to increase and plans are already in motion to open a second shelter closer to Yarnell.
Yavapai County Sheriff’s Office Community Relations Specialist Anthony J. Palermo said buildings were burning as of Sunday night, but could not confirm the number lost to the fire.
