Atlanta: Carjacking Arrest

Carjacking ArrestOn 6-01-2013 around 2:00pm officers responded to Lenox Mall regarding a carjacking. Upon arrival officers met with the victim who advised that she had just parked her vehicle when she was approached by a suspect who produced a handgun and ordered her to leave her purse and exit the vehicle. The suspect then entered the victim’s vehicle and fled the scene. With assistance from Lenox Mall security, officers were able to obtain a description of the suspect as well as the vehicle and quickly give that description out city wide.

Around 3:15pm officers in Southwest Atlanta observed the vehicle in the 900 block or Martin Luther King Jr. Dr and attempted a traffic stop. The vehicle refused to stop and fled from officers. After a brief pursuit the driver bailed from the vehicle and ran on foot. Officers continued to pursue the driver on foot and were able to apprehend him. Property belonging to the victim and a small amount of narcotics were located inside of the vehicle as well as in a backpack that the suspect dropped while running on foot. The handgun was also recovered.

The suspect (in his early twenties) was found to have an active warrant for robbery and will be facing charges related to the carjacking, narcotics and pursuit. At this time we are withholding his name as investigators look into the possibility of him being involved in other crimes in this area. If anyone obtains his name or mug shot we are asking that they not release that to protect the integrity of these investigations. (Further information will be released upon completion of these investigations and we thank you for your patience)

The victim was not physically injured during the incident. The suspect complained of injuries and was transported to Grady Hospital for evaluation.
